RESULTS OF COMMUNITY BASED SURVEY (MATERNAL MORTALITY RATIO) IN SURULERE LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA,

LAGOS STATE.

 

 Results:

This study involved a total of 1510 respondents. The age distribution of the respondents is shown in table 1. Their mean age was 35.2±10.5 years. The median age was 34.0 years. Majority of the respondents were below 45-49 years age group. There was a significant difference in age distribution between male and female respondents (p=0.000).

Nearly half of the respondents (47.9%) had completed secondary education. Those who had no formal education constituted a paltry (1.5%) of the study population. There was a significant difference in the educational attainment of males and females (p=0.000). However, the result shows that a higher percentage of females had no formal education 20 (87.0%) compared to their male counterparts 3 (13.0%).

In table 3, a larger percentage of the respondents (86.3%) were currently not engaged in any school enrolment. While in table 4, over two-third of the respondents (62.9%) were married.

Two thirds of the respondents were engaged in full-time employment. Of those who were working either as full-time or part-time, the distribution of the nature of the work is shown in table 5. Of those who were engaged in some kind of economic activity, close to half were in self-employment, mainly engaged in small to medium businesses, mainly trading.

The distribution of respondents according to religious affiliation is shown in table 6. Overall, more Christians than Moslems were interviewed; 74.6% and 24.3% respectively. The Pentecostals constituted the largest single group comprising 34.6% of the respondents and over seventy-percent (59.3%) of Christians

The number of ever-married sisters is shown in table 7. The numbers ranged from 0-7 with a mean of mean of 1.9±1.0 and median of 2.0. About half (48.2%) of the respondents had 1 or 2 ever-married sisters. In all, there are 2301 ever-married sisters among 1189 respondents.

The life-time risk of maternal death in Surulere LGA was found to be 0.03 or 1 in 33. With a TFR of 4.5, this translates to a Maternal Mortality Ratio of 332 per 100,000

The history of maternal deaths as reported by respondents was examined in relation to their age and marital status in tables 9 and 10. As expected, married sisters who were conceivably older respondents reported a higher percentage of dead sisters than their single counterparts.  

 

Maternal Mortality

Of the 1510 respondents, 11 (0.7%) gave a history of married sisters who died during pregnancy, childbirth or during six weeks after the end of pregnancy or delivery. Of the 11 who died, 5 (45.4%) died during pregnancy, 3 (27.3%) died during childbirth and 3 (27.3%) died during six weeks after pregnancy. Abortion was the most commonly mentioned cause of death during pregnancy, while Prolonged Labour was the common cause during childbirth while HIV/ADS was the cause during the six weeks after end of pregnancy/childbirth.

Maternal Morbidity

Of the 1510 respondents, 232 (15.4%) gave a history of married sisters who fell ill or sustained injury during pregnancy, childbirth or during six weeks after the end of pregnancy or delivery. Of the 232 who fell ill or sustained injury, 137 (59.1%) died during pregnancy, 90 (38.8%) died during childbirth and 5 (2.2%) died during six weeks after pregnancy. Bleeding was the most commonly mentioned cause of ill health, followed by Genital Tear and Infection. Other frequently mentioned cause of ill health was Anaemia.
